(Maricopa, Arizona) MUSD #20 has officially launched the Chief Science Officer Program, also known as CSO. The Chief Science Officer is a program through the SciTech Festival, Arizona Commerce Authority and Arizona Technology Association. CSOs are students who are in grades 6th - 12th who serve in a STEM based leadership capacity within their schools. CSOs are representative for their school, local community and provide a voice on a global level as well. The CSO program was started by Dr. Jeremy Babendure approximately six years ago here in the state of Arizona. Since that time, four additional states that have adopted the program and most recently overseas as well.

Dr. Donna Jagielski, Technology Integration Specialist for the district has been passionate about the CSO program for a number of years. “It is transformative for students since it empowers them and encourages student voice, advocacy, agency as they develop and utilize their leadership skills. It is a grassroots movement that encourages students to be the advocates of their STEM based future,” Jagielski states.

The Maricopa Ak-Chin STEAM Foundation also sees this same value and importance in this program as Dr. Jagielski does since they provided scholarships for these student leaders to be part of the program.

Both middle schools and the high school has CSO representation along with a dedicated staff sponsor at each campus. Dr. Jagielski serves as the district liaison for the program.

The MUSD #20 CSO’s and sponsors attended  the Fall Leadership Institute at UAT (University of Advancing Technology) in Tempe on Friday and Saturday September 28th and 29th.
